Our Mission

Parents today often gravitate toward a behavior modification approach to parenting. But relying on rewards and punishment to get things done seldom changes the heart. Parents say, "If you clean your room you can go out and play," or "Finish your homework, then you can watch TV." The problem is that behavior modification appeals to the selfishness in kids. It basically says, "If you do what I say, you can have what you want." Children then learn to ask the wrong kinds of questions. Instead of asking "What's in it for me?" we want kids to ask the question, "What is the right thing to do?" We're not saying that behavior modification is wrong. It's just incomplete. God gave each person a heart and if you use a heart-based approach with kids then you have a whole new bucket of parenting resources.

We're on a mission to help parents understand how to implement a heart-based approach to parenting. Furthermore, we're eager to help the church develop an environment that supports them.

We have three divisions at the National Center for Biblical Parenting.

Our Parent Division provides hands on practical tools for parents. You'll find email parenting tips, books, audio teaching, and children's curriculum to help you work with your children.

Our Church Division helps churches develop parenting ministries with DVD training programs, over 90 presenters around the country to do live parenting seminars, and many other resources to equip parents.

Biblical Parenting University is an online training program for churches, Christian schools, and parents. With a site license, teachers can access free classroom management courses to learn ways to use a heart-based approach in the classroom. Parents find encouragement and tools to help in their parenting. All the classes are Internet-based and broken into small segments to make them easily accessible and convenient.

We have a passion to empower parents to pass the faith on to their kids and to mobilize churches to equip them.

Our History

The ministry began under the name Effective Parenting in 1992 before the name was changed in 2002 to the National Center for Biblical Parenting. The co-founders, Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN realized the need for biblical, practical parenting resources. Scott Turansky and Ed Miller pastored a church together where Scott and Joanne began teaching parenting seminars as an outreach to the communtiy. They're committed to writing, teaching, and counseling parents from a biblical perspective. Learn more about Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller. Others have joined the team over time. Over the years, the National Center for Biblical Parenting has developed significant strategic relationships with other like-minded organizations. AWANA seeks to use the scriptures to train children and uses materials from the National Center for Biblical Parenting to train parents as well. Our presenters are available to come into an AWANA event to teach parents how to be spiritual trainers for their kids. AWANA purchased 5000 copies of our book Parenting is Heart Work.

The Association of Marriage and Family Ministries is committed to strengthening marriage and family and has invited Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller to lead the Parenting Ministry Team for the organization.

Family Time Training has seven books published by the National Center for Biblical Parenting entitled Family Time Activities and seeks to help parents be the spiritual trainers of their own homes.

Linda Ranson Jacobs, author of Divorce Care for Kids, represents the National Center for Biblical Parenting and heads up the Single Parenting Program.

Tom and Julie Meekins founders of MarchForthFamily are our Special Needs Consultants. Read more and learn more here.

DiscipleLand writes curriculum for children's programs and purchases our books, The Baby Adventure and Toddlers on the Move to use in their nursery curriculum.

The need for parenting ministry is great. The answers are available. We're committed to teaching families how to help their children change their hearts, not just their behavior. We hope you enjoy this web site. If you have any questions please feel free to give us a call, we're here to serve you.
