Like Clay in the Potter’s Hand
By Linda Ranson Jacobs
Many little girls dream about what it’s going to be
like to have their own family when they grow up. Perhaps
you were one of those dreamers. Or maybe when you fell
in love with your children’s father, you had dreams of
the happy family you and he would one day have. Somewhere
along the way, those dreams have become nightmares for
some of you.
Instead of dwelling on what brought you to the point
of parenting alone, change your outlook. Maybe you can’t
get over the feeling that you and your children are victims
of the circumstance that brought you into parenting alone.
God didn’t intend for any of us to be victims. His plan
is for us to be victorious in Him and for Him. God can
rework or reshape your home into a home that can honor
Him. To give you an understanding of what God can do,
let’s go to Jeremiah 18:1-6 (NIV)
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord;
“Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give
you my message.” So I went down to the potter’s house,
and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was
shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the
potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed
best to him. Then the word of the Lord came to me: “O
house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter
does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the
potter, so are you in my hand, ….”
As a discouraged and despondent single mom when I read
this it was as if God was saying to me, “Listen up girl,
I want to rework your home and make it a home of joy
and happiness. I took the children of Israel through
the red sea and set them on dry land. I guided them through
the desert. If I can do all that, don’t you think I can
take care of you and your children? “
Was it instantly easy? No, it was difficult but all
along the way I knew my heavenly Father was guiding me,
reshaping my mind and reworking my attitude. I went from
feeling marred and unworthy to a feeling of being valued
and loved unconditionally through Jesus Christ.
“Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in
my hand….”
